Maternity Photos, SLC

Maternity is sacred. What an incredible, priceless time in a woman’s life! The dawn of every human life begins with the selfless sacrifice of Motherhood. Adequate gratitude could never be expressed to all the women who give of themselves to bring vibrant new personalities into the world. But while it may seem pregnancy lasts forever, it’s such a fleeting time. We want to make sure this delicate season of a woman’s experience is artfully captured through beautiful photography.

It's a fact. Many women consider the pregnancy photoshoot as important as their wedding pictures, but it’s difficult to photogenically prepare for this new situation - this new body. Many of us just aren’t quite sure how to handle this delicate and beautiful pregnancy body. But don’t fret! There are things we can do while pregnant to pose confidently for photos.

At the end of the day, these photos are going to be your memories forever. When we look back at our pregnancy pictures, we won’t see excess weight. What we’ll see are beautiful moments, frozen in time for us and our posterity to enjoy.

What should I wear? So let’s start with examples of what not to wear for pregnancy portraits. For example, wearing something loose, that's covering up and not showing or emphasizing your belly is a no-go. Maternity photos are a time to show off your baby bump (or mountain), so have fun with it and please don’t be shy! The idea is to capture your personality, but to give your adorable unique belly the attention it deserves. Ultimately, we want something that's not to loose, that's not baggy, and it's actually providing a flattering shape.

Then there’s posing. An easy mistake to make is how to stand. Pregnancy photos don’t necessarily lend themselves to being comfortable, so it will take some effort. Obviously, the more comfortable way to stand is with legs apart sitting on one hip. When doing that the front-facing hip is in focus. In this stance the belly, hips, legs - everything is looking broad. Now keep in mind, while most pregnant women will also gain weight in their hips, thighs and butt, most prefer to minimize those changes in their portraits. The desired look can be achieved with just improving your poses. There’s no need to depend on Photoshop to make your body parts look slimmer.

It's all about that belly! Instead of standing straight, go diagonal, or complete side profiles. This way you can give proper attention to the belly. And also because the center of gravity shifts when you're pregnant, you tend to slouch, which lends itself to the belly is not getting enough attention. In fact while slouching, your body is shrinking. So you're not elongating it. We want to elongate. Bring the legs in closer. Go on your toe instead of being flat footed. The moment you go on to elongate your leg and turn the body slightly at an angle, the attention goes more towards the belly because you’re slimming your hips. We’re aiming to create and S shape with the body, which is more interesting and flattering. Part of the reason the S shape works is because it reduces the amount of visual area the legs, thighs, and the butt are taking up in the frame.

You want to show care, affection, and attachment to the baby, so use your hands to cradle the belly and the baby. So you could do that by pointing fingers on both hands going down. You could do that with one hand up and down. You could do that holding it on the sides. You could also go one hand at the back in one hand under the belly. Doing this creates more angles. We want to post ways that create more triangles, which assist to make the belly stand out a lot more and give you variation in your pictures that you're always looking for.

Now, now - don’t slouch! The moment you stretch your back your shoulders, you're showing that you're proud of what you have here. So always instead of holding the belly, you can always support your back and stretch your back and pose. And whatever shows in your body language will show on your face you will automatically get that proud, confident look on your face, which is what we want from pregnant women pictures. It's purely about strength and beauty of your pregnant form.

It's all about the emotion. When you're taking pregnancy pictures, it's very important to concentrate on your emotions, your expressions, because everything you do has to convey a story, your emotion, your affection, what you're feeling right now for the baby and for your future. Bring all those thoughts in your mind when you're doing a maternity photo shoot. So instead of standing and waiting for a photo, be active, think about the movements inside, think about the baby, look more vibrant, and be present in the moment. Remember, your outfit or makeup aren’t going to matter if you don't look happy and thoughtful. If you're conscious, that's what will show in the pictures.

You and the lens. Don't always look into the camera and smile. Look away at times. When you have your hands on your belly, in the middle when you're cradling the tummy, think about the child. Be in the moment, feel the emotions, and capture the emotion of the expression. Confident, beautiful, soft, all at the same time.

Now, alongside deliberate poses, candid pictures work amazingly well too. Just remember to stretch your back and elongate your body throughout the photoshoot. So if you’re walking down the stairs, act like you're absolutely unaware of the camera. And while you're doing it, make sure your belly stretched out and your back is stretched.
